Water skiiers from Brisbane, Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Inverell, Narrabri, Gunnedah and Wee Waa came to Moree to improve their skills during sessions with accredited coaches.
“It was very successful,” Moree Water Ski Club president James von Drehnen said. “We had about 25 skiiers and each of those had between one and four sets. One boat was flat out the whole weekend, 10 hours a day.”
There were beginners to backwards barefooters, and even a man with a disability.
Mr von Drehnen said this was very encouraging and reinforced the club’s plan to make the water park accessible for everyone.
The weekend also demonstrated Moree Plains Shire Council’s vision for the water park as a regional attraction.
“In 2014 Moree Plains Shire Council recognised that if the planned evaporation ponds were upgraded for water skiing, including tournament lakes, then they would have the potential of attracting visitors to our region and, even with Moree Water Park at its most basic form, this has proven to be true,” he said.
“Everyone was really impressed and can see the potential.
“It was also pleasing to see a regular stream of visitors who just wanted to come out and see the progress at the park.”
The club also gained a few more members from the weekend.
Moree Water Ski Club would like to thank Tim Murray and Michael Ashton who gave their time, profit-free, to come down and coach from Toowoomba.
Mr von Drehnen would also like to extend a big thank you to locals Guy Brabrook and Angus and Greg Croft who went above and beyond the call of duty in the blazing sun.
Moree Plains Shire Council and Moree Water Ski Club are working collaboratively to implement a five-year development plan which includes shelters, camping areas, thousands of trees and a beach area.
“If last weekend is any indication then we are on the right track,” coach Angus Croft said.
