In September 1966 Mr Heffernan joined the team of volunteers and throughout the years received many accolades.
He received three clasps for the National Service Medal and three clasps for the NSW Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He has also held many ranks throughout the years, and is now known as deputy captain.
Station officer Scott Beers congratulated him and said the people of Moree should be proud.
“He has been a wonderful example and inspiration to our younger fire fighters. He is a very humble man and an extremely good fire fighter,” he said.

Mr Heffernan has helped train new volunteer and permanent fire fighters throughout the years.
“Everyone is always in awe of Brian. We are extremely lucky to have him and hope he continues to turn up,” he said.
James Pritchard served with Mr Heffernan for 44 years and said although he never thought of himself as a leader, he clearly was.
“When the permanents sign off for the day, the volunteers step up, at any time.
“Brian has always been a very proud fire fighter.”
