This news follows last week’s announcement that the Northern Tablelands and New England sub-branch, which incorporates Bingara, may be forced to fold if they cannot fill executive roles which have been left vacant due to the passing or retirement of some members.
The Bingara Nashos have held a reunion weekend every year for the past 23 years, however, sadly this year’s was their last.
So, rather than let the event die, Moree RSL sub-branch volunteered to take it on from next year.
“We’re bringing it to Moree because people have either died off or are too old to carry it on,” Moree RSL sub-branch and Nashos affiliate member Margaret Wetzler-Brazel said.
The 24th annual Nashos reunion, to be held in Moree on the second weekend of March, will be a combined reunion for all national servicemen, as well as all service personnel, past and present.
Moree RSL sub-branch president and North West Nashos treasurer, Reg Jamieson, who is on the reunion organising sub-committee, along with Mrs Wetzler-Brazel, said they are hoping the reunion will bring together Nashos and service personnel.
“The reunion is to unite both sides; it’s open at all service personnel,” he said.
While specific details are yet to be confirmed, plans are currently underway for the weekend which will begin on Friday, March 10, 2017 with a meet and greet, followed by a commemorative service, lunch and entertainment on Saturday and then a church service on Sunday.
The reunion will attract Nashos members from all over Australia, and with the Bingara reunion usually bringing $50,000 to the town, it is expected to greatly benefit the Moree community.
“It might actually be bigger than Ben-Hur,” Mrs Wetzler-Brazel said.
“It’ll bring lots of money to the town. We’re hoping the community will get behind us.”
