“It was a great turnout that really showed the community was getting behind this cause,” Miyay Birray’s Glen Crump said.
The community event was a joint initiative of Miyay Birray and Northcott. This year marked the first time an event of this kind had been held at Moree.
“I think as more people become aware that there are residents in Moree that are living or are linked with autism, the more they realise there is a need to raise awareness,” Mr Crump said.
Autism Awareness Month is a national campaign held in April that promotes autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assures that each person with Autism Spectrum Disorder is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.

Raising awareness is a mission that is personal to Mr Crump, with his 10-year old nephew sitting on the Autism Spectrum. Mr Crump recently took part in the Walk for Autism, which saw him master 10,000 steps a day between April 8 and 15.
“I intended to raise $700 for the cause, but managed to raise $800. That money will go to Autism Spectrum NSW,” he said.
Around 40 people turned out for a sausage sizzle and music at the local park. A raffle was also put on, with prizes such as vouchers, jewellery cases and a coffee with Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall.
Mr Crump said there had already been interest from the local community for a similar day-out to be hosted next year.
“It will be great to see if we can get more people to turn out next year,” he said.
