Between January and December in 2017, 219 incidents of domestic violence occurred in Moree Plains, equating to 1,611 per 100,000 residents.
“The recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report revealed that domestic violence causes more disability and deaths than any other risk factor for women aged 25-44,” said domestic violence expert and head of DV Safety NSW Christine Bird.
Greens NSW MP Dr Mehreen Faruqi weighed in on the issue.
“Violence against women is at epidemic levels in this country, and there is a dangerous shortage of services for women and children. It’s high time we treated domestic and sexual violence as the national emergency that it is, and pull together enough resources so that no woman is ever turned away or left without services.”
