Between the early hours of Tuesday (November 21) evening and Wednesday morning, a number of cars in the Moree Hospital carpark were vandalised and broken into, in addition to the vandalism of bins and other public property around the Moree Visitor Information Centre park area.
“There was a lot of anti-social behaviour and hoodlum-related activity from young people including acts of damage to property, some theft and harrassment of people walking by,” Barwon LAC duty officer Inspector Martin Burke said.
Inspector Burke said the area around Moree Hospital and the Moree Visitor Information Centre park has been a hot-spot for crime in recent months, with groups of between 10 to 20 young people often seen congregating in the area.
“Large groups congregate in the Alice Street/Victoria Terrace area and some are committing acts of vandalism and theft offences,” he said.
“It’s the general anti-social behaviour which is concerning us.”
Inspector Burke said police would like to remind parents to know where their children are and who they are associated with, particularly coming into the summer school holidays, during which time police often see a spike in crime.
“Young people at that age shouldn’t be out on the street,” he said.
“We want to reiterate parental responsibility and remind parents to know where their children are and check they are where they’re supposed to be.
“We’re working with council, Family and Community Services, and youth services to look at rectifying the issue and in the meantime we’re increasing patrols targeting that area.”
Police urge anyone with any information regarding any of these incidents to call Moree Police Station on 6757 0799 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/
