Public Speaking is one thing that most of us do not enjoy or feel comfortable doing. Not the students in Years 3-6 at Saint Philomena’s.
Last week saw the finals of the annual grades 3-6 Public Speaking Competition.
The finals are the culmination of a term long Public Speaking focus in English. All students prepared a speech and practised at home before presenting to their class.
Select students progressed to the semifinals and presented their speech to a larger group of students and a panel of teachers. The top six speakers were chosen to compete in the finals.
Toastmasters representatives, Andrew O’Neill, David Venz and Shane Hadley, were the adjudicators for the day and were faced with the hard job of selecting a winner and a runner up for each grade.
The students were marked on preparation, knowledge of subject matter, facial expressions, use of gestures and body language, audience engagement and meeting the specified time limit.
The results of the very tight competition were as follows:
Year 3 Winner - Rose Kirky, “Pig Chasing”; Runner-Up - Maggie Herring, “Abducted by a Dragon”.
Finalists - Olivia Donaldson, Sylvia Osborn, Alexander Bell, Harry Rogers.
Year 4 Winner - Angus Manchee, “ Nerves”; Runner-Up - Fred Finlayson, “ Smiling”.
Finalists - Hugh Reardon, Harrison George, Gilbert Tighe, Archie Crawford.
Year 5 Winner - Angus Reardon, “Aplastic Anaemia”; Runner-Up - Bella Fernance, “Ages and Stages of Human Life”.

Year 6 Winner - Max Downes, “My Convict Ancestor”; Runner-Up - Oliver Morse, “My Scariest Experience Ever”.
