Representing the local group was Amy, Mick, Nick and Brad Haley accompanied by instructor Glen Bailey.
The elimination-style event was the Haley family’s first competition since beginning to learn the art form through Moree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu five months ago.
Bailey said he was extremely impressed with the Haley family who were all in different divisions.
Amy won a silver and bronze medal after competing in two separate divisions for white-belt female.
Meanwhile, her husband Mick competed in the 88 kilogram, white-belt male division and finished with a silver medal.
The two youngsters, Nick and Bradley also won silver in their divisions.
“Nick should be very proud and Bradley was impressive for his first competition,” Bailey said.
The Moree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor also competed in the competition, with a little more experience, already holding a Queensland state title in the purple belt heavy weight division.
You don’t have to be big or strong as long as you follow proper technique and have the right leverage you’ll be able to do any submission.
Bailey received two bronze medals in purple weight open division, one with Gi and one no Gi.
Depending on the division competitors participated in three to 10 rounds on the day before advancing into the finals. Bailey described Jiu Jitsu as the art form of a smaller, weaker person being able to defend themselves against a larger opponent.
“You don’t have to be big or strong as long as you follow proper technique and have the right leverage you’ll be able to do any submission,” he said.
The local instructor encouraged anyone interested in the sport to head down to the PCYC on Tuesdays at 6pm and Thursday’s at 6.15pm to try it out.
There is no age or gender limit. “The style we follow sees us on the ground a lot so joint locks, chokes, submissions, things like that,” he said. Anyone wanted to learn self defense, discipline or improve their fitness is encouraged to try it out.
“We want to thank the Moree and District Services Club for their donation for new mats.” To keep up to date like ‘Moree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’ on Facebook.
