Holes were dug deeper and the track was covered with thick, slippery mud to test some of the most experienced drivers around.
Veteran mud bomber Errol Carter said throughout the season trials had been held at Collarenebri, Walgett, Boomi and Mungindi where competitors accumulated points.
“The Mud Bomb of the Year Award for standards, modifieds and buggies was very close. There were three bombs in the standard class all on 13 points and it came down to a count back to decide the winner,” he said.
On Sunday Buggies and Standards competed in four 20-minute heats throughout the day, and Modifieds faced two 45-minute heats.
The Standard Mud Bomb of the Year was won by Peter Bayliss driving The Unit, finishing on 13 points.
Luke Dair took out the Buggie Mud Bomb of the Year in Mud Doctor with the maximum 15 points.
Carter’s Hershey won the Modified Mud Bomb of the Year also with 15 points.
He said the high level of experienced drivers and mud bombs was shown on the day.
“Even though we dug the holes deeper this year there were only a few mud bombs that got bogged, which proves that the bombs are getting better each year.
“But we are going to dig them even deeper next year to ensure a harder track. We also realise the dust was quite bad for the crowd and we are in the process of organising a sprinkler system for next year. We do apologise for that,” he said.
At the end of the day first, second and third place was announced with Peter Bayliss winning the standards in The Unit. Matt Wilson placed second in Bruiser and Dave Hall came third in Flogga.
Luke Dair’s Mud Doctor won in the Buggies, followed by second place Peter Vukovich in Little Devil and in third place was Peter Bayliss in Rust Bucket.
Errol Carter and Hershey won the Modified class and Tom Hall placed second in Wosetan. Jarid Williams came in third place with La Bomba.
Highest female point scorer was Caitlyn Perryman in The General.
The crowd numbers were alright, according to Carter and said there were plenty of friends and family there to support drivers on the day.
“It was a lot of fun, everyone had a good day. Next year we will definitely make it harder.”
He extended a huge thanks to the many sponsors in 2017 who made the annual mud trials possible.
Along with the members, volunteers and supporters who helped organise the event.
