The whole community is invited to come along to ‘An Afternoon of Music’, hosted by Moree and District Band at the Multi-Purpose Centre, from 2pm.
The Moree and District Band regularly perform at a wide range of community events and civic functions throughout the shire, however they decided they would like to put on their very own concert this month to showcase what they can do.
“It gives people a chance to hear a brass band in an auditorium – it has a much richer sound than outside,” Moree and District Band correspondence secretary Michele Maurer said. “It’s a different experience.”
For just a gold coin donation at the door, the whole family can come along and experience all the brass band has to offer.
There’ll be something to everyone’s taste at the concert with marches, musicals, movie themes and more to feature.
“We’ll be playing a really wide range of music, from a medly of Mary Poppins songs to the Game of Thrones, Raiders of the Last Ark and Austin Powers’ theme songs,” Ms Maurer said.
“There’ll also be things like ‘New York New York’, ‘Eye of the Tiger’, and ‘Money Money Money’.”
There will also be other performances by some of the talented band members throughout the afternoon, including a performance by the beginner group.
Moree Girl Guides will be providing afternoon tea following the concert as part of their community project.
The afternoon will also provide an opportunity for anyone interested in joining the band to find out more.
“We’d love to encourage anyone from the community to come along and have a nice afternoon and a cuppa, and if people have any questions about the band we’re more than happy to answer them,” Ms Maurer said.
About Moree and District Band:
Moree and District Band is one of the oldest established bands in the country.
There are currently about 30 playing members of the band, as well as a beginner group for those still learning.
The band always welcomes new members and Ms Maurer said no musical knowledge is needed to join.
“You don’t need to know how to play an instrument or read music, just be enthusiastic and prepared to commit each week,” she said.
“We run programs to teach people how to play an instrument.
“We provide tuition, instruments and uniforms free of charge. All you have to do is be a member – membership is $20 a year. It’s very cheap and very affordable for a family.”
Moree and District Band comprises purely of brass instruments including the cornet, flugel, tenor horn, baritone horn, euphonium trombone and tuba.
Current band members range in age from 10 to 70, with people from all walks of life.
“We’re all there for the music; age and what you do for a living don’t matter,” Ms Maurer said.
The band rehearses every Thursday at the band hall at Jellico Park at 7pm, while the beginner group rehearses on Tuesdays.
“We always welcome people to come along and have a listen on a Thursday if they want to find out what we’re all about,” Ms Maurer said.
