The Community Connect Day, to be held at Cooee Park from 10am on Wednesday, September 20, is an initiative of New England Regional Sustainable Housing and Homelessness (NERSHH) and Moree Area Homelessness Service (MAHS) services (Moree Family Support, Byamee Proclaimed Place and Ngala Women’s Refuge), who have partnered with Moree Plains Shire Council.
NERSHH coordinator Ros Laws said the day is all about showcasing the range of services on offer in the community in an informal setting.
“This is an early intervention strategy – often people are unaware of what services are in our town that could help in many aspects of their lives,” she said.
“A lot of people are hesistant to go into services because they don’t know what they do.
“This is about showcasing what our services can actually offer and building a rapport with the community.
“And it’s not just about what we can do for them but what they want from us; it’s a way to find out what they need so we can structure our services to the community.”
As well as connecting the community with services, the day is also a good chance for service providers to network with each other to continue working collaboratively.
So far, about 30 services – covering everything from homeless and family support to health and employment – will be in attendance with interactive information stalls and activities on the day.
The Salvation Army and Lifehouse will be providing a pop-up shop for those looking for a bargain.
There will also be a free barbecue, health checks, a touch football game, and a number of other activities available for the whole family.
If your service would like to be involved in the day, contact Ros Laws on 0457 544 461.
