Members of the New Englanders, a chapter of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Ltd visited the station following a chapter weekend held at the Myall Creek Hall.
The group felt it was an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Station owner Rhonda McGregor, gave a brief history of the house which was built in 1895. She then gave a tour through her new home. Rhonda and her husband Bob purchased the property about two years ago and are the first owners to live in the house for over thirty years.
Rhonda is in the process of renovating the homestead and now the rooms are painted antique white to show off the stained glass windows and wood furniture. The house once had another wing which included a ballroom, but this was removed many years ago.
After a scrumptious afternoon tea complete with “killer” caramel slice, the chapter members were loaded into various utes for a tour of the property.
Bob and son Duncan explained the various crops and from a vantage point at the upper cattle yards, the property was spread out below. It was evident that it wasn’t only the homestead that had been restored and plenty of hard work had been done erecting fences, yards, roadways and planting the various crops.
The tour included a visit to the old shearers’ quarters and woolshed.
This was the first time the house has been opened to a tour group and resulted from the chance meeting between the New Englanders’ secretary Joy Woods and Mrs McGregor about two years ago in Boggabri.
Mrs McGregor was pleased to have the group as her “guinea pigs” and they were very pleased with the tour and the generous amount of the family’s time spent with them.
Further group tours of the homestead will be conducted in the future and arrangements can be made by contacting myallcreekstation@outlook.com.au.
The New Englanders have members from Glen Innes, Deepwater, Armidale, Delungra, Tenterfield, Inverell and surrounds. Each month the group have a three day weekend somewhere in the New England area or beyond.
