Despite a 138-point thrashing by the Tamworth Kangaroos on the weekend, the Moree Suns are remaining positive, having recorded their most successful season since entering the Tamworth AFL competition.

The previous weekend the Suns seniors recorded their third win of the season, in a close match (15.10-100 to 12.10-82) against the Tamworth Swans. The three-goal win saw the Suns meet this season’s goal to record more wins than last year.
Seniors co-coach Angus Croft said it was a good game and a great achievement for the club, which has only been part of the Tamworth AFL competition for three years.
“It was good to get a win away, it was our first win away,” he said. “It was also the first win our club’s ever had in Tamworth.”
Croft said bettering last year’s efforts shows the club is moving forward, with plenty of room for growth in the years ahead.
“On top of these three wins, we’ve had a couple of close games, and if Narrabri didn’t pull out of the competition, it could have been a couple more wins,” he said.
While the Suns had a good win against the Swans, they didn’t have as much success against the other Tamworth team, going down 26.16-172 to 4.10-34 to the Kangaroos on Saturday.
Travelling back to Tamworth for the second week in a row took its toll on the players, with numbers significantly down on Saturday.
The seniors took the field with only 17 players, with one having to be stretchered off, while a number of others were also injured. There were even a few injured players who had to stay on the field to make up numbers.
“It was a really long day,” Croft said. “It was disappointing – the last time we played the Roos, we put up a good game. It would have been a different game if we had our usual team but it’s a credit to everyone who showed up; they gave it everything they’ve got.”
The Suns juniors continued to dominate their competition with a 25.20-170 to 7.6-48 victory over the Roos, while the women lost 11.15-81 to 2.0-12.
Saturday also marked another milestone for the Moree club, whose first official umpire, Annette Hadley, umpired her first seniors game.
