Council’s road safety officer Renee McMillian said council is using the safe system approach to improving road safety and asking drivers to provide local knowledge about road conditions and driving behaviours.
“The campaign focuses on motorists’ behaviour and their awareness of conditions on unsealed local roads,” she said.
“The key message, ‘you don’t have to be speeding to be driving too fast’, addresses appropriate speed selection on local unsealed roads, urging motorists to slow down and drive to conditions.
“What is concerning is that in the last five years, from 2010 to 2014, there were 36 crashes that occurred on unsealed roads in Moree Plains, resulting in 38 people being injured.”
Anecdotal evidence suggests that people are becoming complacent and hold a strong belief that they are better and safer motorists than the rest of the driving public and therefore take unnecessary risks and don’t drive to conditions.
By completing this survey, community members will be assisting council to identify any unsealed roads that may need to be part of a wider road safety audit program while helping us get a broader understanding of road behaviours.
