The honour roll will be unveiled during Reconciliation Week (May 29 to June 2).
Reconciliation Week committee co-chair Cathy Duncan said it was a way to recognise Elders, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, who are well respected and have made a positive contribution to the community.
“Although it will be launched at the same time as the Reconciliation Week awards, this is different. Rather than being a one-off award, this honour roll represents a piece of Moree history, and preserves the memory of Moree’s Elders both past and present,” she said.
The idea for the honour roll came about after Moree Plains Shire Council mayor Katrina Humphries was approached by community members who wanted to ensure the living history of our Elders is preserved.
Cr Humphries has encouraged the community to nominate Elders.
‘This honour roll is great way to recognise our fantastic Elders who have contributed to reconciliation and the Moree community, and I can’t wait to launch it.”
Nominations for the Elders honour roll are open until Friday 12 May 2017. Any Elder, living or deceased, may be nominated.
