Houlahan returned to Moree briefly last week in between finishing the cricket season with his Gold Coast Dolphins team and flying back to England on Monday for the start of their cricket season, which begins on April 24.
Last year, Houlahan was lucky enough to get the opportunity to play for Enfield Cricket Club in the Middlesex County Cricket League in England and, after an impressive season, was asked to return again this year.
The 20-year-old was then forced to decide between returning to England for a second season, or starting a sports development degree at Griffith University on the Gold Coast.
It was a tough decision, however cricket won out in the end.
“I came back and had a really good season at the Gold Coast and decided one more year will be beneficial to gain higher honours statewide,” Houlahan said.
“There’s no point doing uni and going after uni.
“I’d be too old to play cricket at the higher level, so thought I’d push for it now while I’m still young and in selectors’ eyes.”
Houlahan said his stint in England last year helped to significantly improve his game, particularly when it comes to dealing with difficult situations.
“Last year, playing up in Brisbane [prior to going to England], I doubted myself and my ability,” he said.
“When I’ve come back, I’ve got the belief that I can match it with the better players in the state.
“I’m gaining the experience over there to put into my mind when I come back.
“The pitches we play on over there are so different, you’ve got to change the way you approach your game. Here, wickets are faster and come onto the bat easier.
“It taught me a lot about becoming more naturally tough and how to get through tough times and not let it get to you.”
When the cricket season ends in England, Houlahan will return to the Gold Coast Dolphins where he hopes to “put a few good performances on the board” with the aim of gaining a spot with the Queensland state side.
