With two new coaches at the helm this year and a number of new players, the club is hoping to improve on their efforts from last year.
Angus Croft and Andrew Beinke will be co-coaching the Suns seniors and are looking forward to the season ahead.
“We’re really keen to have a red-hot crack this year and make something of the season,” Croft, who returned to his hometown of Moree earlier this year, said.
“There’s a lot of improvement that needs to happen with the team; we want to close the gap between us and the other teams to be a bit more of a competitive side.”
Last year the Suns only won two games, both against Narrabri, and suffered some significant losses against the larger, more established clubs in the competition.
Being only their third season in the competition, Croft said it’ll take some development to be up there with the likes of the Tamworth, New England and Gunnedah clubs but he’s confident of improving this year.
This year’s goal is to win more games.
“We want to win a few games and be a bit more competitive this year,” he said.
The Suns are a relatively young team, with ages ranging from late teens to late 20s.
Training for the upcoming season began about four weeks ago and with numbers fluctuating between about 18 to eight players, Croft would love to see more come along and join the team.
“We’re looking for more players,” he said.
“We had a few blokes leave the side this year but a few come in.
“I know the players are out there, it’s just about getting them down there and getting them keen. We’re looking for anyone with any athletic ability.”
Croft encourages anyone looking to improve their fitness to give AFL a go and come along to training.
“It’s a really good fitness game,” he said.
“It’s a very fun, skilful and fast-moving game; a good team sport.”
Anyone aged 15 and up can join the seniors team. Moree Suns also have a juniors team for under 16s.
Training is Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm.
From next week training will be moved to Weebolla Oval as there are no lights at Taylor Oval.
The 2017 TAFL season will kick off on Saturday, April 1.
Suns will play in front of a home ground for their first game of the season against the Inverell Saints.
“It’d be good to field a good side for the first round,” Croft said.
