In rural areas, almost everyone knows someone who has been transported by a Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

“A lot of people wouldn’t survive without the helicopter. It’s our link to bigger hospitals and fast service,” local support group president Gary Cosh said.

Keen to keep the vital service going, the group have invited locals of all ages and experience levels to come along to their charity golf day on Sunday.

“Every fundraiser like this helps keep it in the air,” member Joy Holmes said.

Gary is all to aware of the service’s worth, joining the support group after being flown out himself.

“I think it’s such a wonderful service, and I certainly owe them,” he said.

“It’s a vital service for a country town.”

A four person ambrose, the day will be split into a morning and afternoon session, with service club members playing from 7.30am followed by a free barbecue lunch.

Golf pro Matthew McGuire and assistant Adam Brown will make sure the day runs smoothly, and give tips to beginners.

There will be shot competitions for confident players to show off their skill, and plenty of prizes up for grabs in the raffle.

A new AW139 helicopter is on its way to service the Moree area in the near future. A bigger vehicle than the current chopper, it will be able to fly greater distances without refueling.

The Moree support branch was formed 20 years ago, and meets once a month.

“It is an enthusiastic group of people working to ‘keep the helicopter in the air’, and importantly helping to enable this wonderful service to continue coming to Moree,” Joy said. The group are always looking for new members, and are keen to build up their male membership.

To take part in the golf day, visit or call the Moree Golf Club pro shop on 6752 1405. The cost is $30 a head, and will be split between the pro and support service.
