The recently released storybook, Respect starts with us, is aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and focuses on the role adults play in influencing disrespectful attitudes and behaviours in young people.
Respect starts with us follows the journey of young PJ and his family as they learn to recognise disrespectful attitudes and behaviours in themselves, and start having conversations on respectful relationships.
The storybook, which highlights the importance of talking with young people about respect, has now been released to Aboriginal Medical Centres and Land Councils across Australia, including the Moree Aboriginal Interagency group.
At their last meeting, the books were distributed among a number of local services, including Moree Women’s Refuge, Bamba-Baa Protecting Aboriginal Children Together, Pius X Aboriginal Corporation and Miyay Birray, to pass on to their clients.
Moree Aboriginal Interagency chair Glen Crump said it’s a great resource for parents to use to teach their children about respect.
“You can never start too early promoting that violence against women isn’t acceptable in our community,” he said.
“It’s written in a way young people can identify with.”
Miyay Birray has already run out of books, having handed out 20 over the past couple of weeks, and is putting in an order for more.
“It’s one of these campaigns you can never underestimate,” Mr Crump said.
“Just by someone taking a booklet means they’re taking a step in the right direction.”
