Moree ended up reaching a total of 54 days of temperatures above 35, as did Mungindi.
The two towns now share the new state record for the most number of days in a row of maximum temperatures above 35 degrees.
Saturday was the final day of temperatures over 35, with a top of 42.1 in Mungindi and 40.3 in Moree.
The record ended with Sunday’s cool change which saw Moree reach a maximum of only 27.2 degrees, while Mungindi recorded a top of 30.2. The cool change continued on Monday with a predicted top of 31 degrees.
However, we haven’t seen the last of the heat, with the temperature set to rise again on Tuesday and continue in the mid-to-high 30s for the remainder of the week.
A top of 35 is predicted for Tuesday, Wednesday is expected to reach 36 degrees and Thursday and Friday will be hot with highs of 37 and 38 respectively. The weekend will be another warm one with 37 predicted for Saturday and 36 and possible showers for Sunday.
As well as breaking the state record for the most consecutive days above 35, Moree has also smashed a number of its own heat records this summer.
With a total of 21 days over 40 so far this summer, Moree has nearly doubled the previous record set in the summer of 2005/06, which was 11 days.
We have also had 21 nights of at least 25 degrees, more than double the previous record of nine, also set in the summer of 2005/06.
February alone has so far recorded eight days over 40 and 10 nights over 25, and we still have another full week to go.
