The Moree brothers were the youngest players in their respective divisions at the two-day tournment, held on Tuesday, January 10, and Wednesday, January 11.

Six-year-old Declan won the smallest division, the combined 9 hole event, during which he played five holes on Tuesday and four on Wednesday.

With a score of 33 the first day, followed by 22 on the second, Declan also won the most improved score over the two days, as well as winning the long drive and NTP (nearest to the pin) awards.

This was Declan’s second tournament, having only been playing for the past 12 months.

His father, Moree golf pro Matthew McGuire, said he did very well.

“He was over the moon,” McGuire said.

Aydan, aged eight, also did well at the Tenterfield tournament, having stepped up from the combined 9 hole division to play the combined 18 hole event this year.

Playing nine holes each day, Aydan scored 62 the first day and followed it up with a personal best of 52 the second day.

This was an improvement of his best score by nine shots, which McGuire said was a great effort.

“He improved his best score by a long way,” McGuire said.

“It was his first time moving up to the full 9 hole event and he finished sixth out of 25 kids, most of whom were three to four years older.”

Aydan has also only been playing golf for the past 12 months but this was his fourth tournament, having competed in Moree, Connabarabran and Gunnedah last year.

McGuire said the boys got a thrill to receive some swinging tips from Greg Norman’s old coach.

“They were lucky enough to have Greg Norman’s old coach, Charlie Earp, – who is in the Australian Sport Hall of Fame - have a look at their swings,” he said.

“It was a fantastically run event with the golf course in great condition.”

McGuire said his boys enjoyed golf and plan to continue competing this year. They are looking forward to competing in the Moree Junior Golf Open on Sunday, February 26.
