Pet first aid instructor Catherine Nunn will be keeping Gizmo, 2, and Tessa, 6, her Shetland sheepdogs, indoors this New Year's Eve and advises others to do the same.

"The fireworks are a reasonable distance away but even then I will keep them indoors, I wouldn't let them go too close," she said.

Ms Nunn recommends pet owners pay particular attention to their animals if they are scared of fireworks, and should not leave planning until the last minute.

"You need to keep them in a quiet room, somewhere where they won't hurt themselves. If people know that their dog is terrified, they should talk to the vet about whether there is anything they could do to keep it calm at the time," she said.

Head of Hospital Services at Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Dr Russell Harrison, said fireworks and any loud noises  were the most common situations affecting the behaviour of pets.

"Lots of dogs and cats are frightened of [loud noises], especially when owners are not home. Pets can get into a lot of trouble as they try to escape from the noise," he said.

Firework events can cause a range of severe injuries due to stress and fear, resulting in more animals being taken to the Lort Smith and RSPCA shelters over the New Year period.

"Following thunderstorms and fireworks, we will see dogs that come in that have escaped through a fence and injured themselves," Dr Harrison said.

Media adviser for the RSPCA, Sophie Bachanan, said its shelters assisted many pet owners in finding lost animals during New Year.

"New Year's Day is often our busiest day in the shelter, because everyone is trying to find the pets that have been spooked and run away in the fireworks season," she said.

Dr Harrison urged owners to be mindful of dangers that could be fatal for their four-legged companions.

"While we always need to be wary of hazards around our pets, there are increased seasonal risks which can be easily avoided. We encourage owners to be vigilant at this busy time of year," Dr Harrison said.

Liz Walker, the chief executive officer of RSPCA Victoria, said the best parts of the festive season can be the worst days for our pets.

"Summer can be a very tough time for our pets, with hot weather, a higher risk of thunderstorms, and fireworks celebrations all creating hazards that many pets find overwhelming," she said.

However, if pet owners take safety precautions, these risks can be avoided.

"With a little bit of planning though, you can prepare your pet to enjoy the celebrations almost as much as you do," Ms Walker said.

Hopefully for Gizmo and Tessa, 2017 will start with bang but not a whimper.
