The party was the idea of Pius X Aboriginal Corperation board member Jess Duncan who thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the elders and get them into the Christmas spirit.
“It’s about giving back to our elders and appreciation of our elders,” she said.
“It’s an honour to have so many elders over the age of 65; they’re treasures of our community.
“It’s good for the social and emotional wellbeing of elders to have a function like today to interact with each other at this time of the year.”
Pius X board members and staff organised the luncheon, which featured a delicious hot meal cooked by Kenneth Knox. Entertainment was provided by singer Lamoney Brown.
This was the first time an elders’ Christmas lunch has been held and Ms Duncan said they hope to make it an annual event.
Elder Peggy Binge attended the party and said everyone had a wonderful time.
“What a time we had catching up with old mates, telling yarns and jokes,” she said. “Excellent tucker was cooked and served especially for us. We are honored by the community and it has made our holiday season extra special.
“Besides great food and scrumptious desserts we were blessed to have vocal entertainment by a local teenager, door prizes won by most and an opportunity to learn more about local Aboriginal services at Pius X Thank you Pius X staff.”
