Enrollments for the two program dates are being taken by the MAAC who have taken over the role as organisers from the Department of Sport and Recreation for 2017. 

Chief operating officer Julie Rushby said the Swim to Survive program would remain exactly the same, despite the change of hands.

“We do water awareness and confidence with little kids, our youngest are from 18 months and up.

“Program movement will depend on each individual child’s ability and skill level.

“Each level has an element of water safety. For example smaller children are taught to jump in and swim to the side whereas older children are taught basic bronze life saving skills.”

The morning classes will run from 8.30am for 30 minutes each day. Program one will commence from Tuesday, January 3 while program two will start on Monday, January 16.

The three levels include:

Ms Rushby stressed the importance of water and sun safety.

“The MAAC are apart of a Cancer Council sun safe program where every hour a jungle plays over the sound system reminding people to be sun safe,” she said.

She agreed with sun safe ambassador Laurie Lawrence’s famous quote “swimming is a skill for life”.

“The river, dam and any other large body of water can be dangerous so parents cannot take even a second for granted when supervising children in and around water. 

“Also lifeguards aren’t babysitters so regardless of age children should be supervised by their parents.

“It only takes a second for something to go wrong and even the most confident swimmers can find themselves in trouble,” she said.

Ms Rushby said drowning statistics were increasing, thus the further need for water awareness and swimming lessons.
