But it won’t just be any old classroom. Located in the school’s eco garden, the self-sufficient space will employ energy efficient initiatives including solar panels, rainwater harvesting and LED lighting.

The project will involve more than 100 students and 30 community members, including representatives from North West Local Land Services, Northern Slopes Landcare Association, Moree Art Gallery, Barwon Learning Centre, and the Sydney Botanical Gardens.

All partners currently play a pivotal role in supporting the Moree Secondary College school’s eco garden, running various workshops about composting, worm farming, natural cleaning, organic veggie gardening, nutrition, living a healthy life and more.

The grant was awarded in line with Bridgestone’s Tomorrow Matters initiative, with schools across Australia invited to apply for ten funding grants of up to $10,000 to be put towards an infrastructure or school project with a focus on the environment, technology or youth development.

It was part of a promotion for Bridgestone’s Ecopia low rolling resistance fuel saving tyre, with a number of Bridgestone stores winning the opportunity for schools in their area to apply.

“We were enormously pleased to find out we had been successful in our grant application as part of Bridgestone’s Community Schools Project,” said Moree Secondary College’s environmental teacher, Peta Gallagher.

“It’s really great to see Bridgestone supporting the community at this level in such a meaningful way, helping us deliver a fantastic facility for current and future students

“The new outdoor classroom will be used by all our students, connecting them to the environment as they nurture their own plants and fresh produce and learn about creating a sustainable society and ecosystem.”

“We were thrilled when we heard we had won the right for schools in our region to apply for this $10,000 grant,” said Graham Warner, owner of Bridgestone Service Centre Moree.

“Moree Secondary College ’s project sounds really worthwhile and, the best part is, it’s setting students up with important practical and environmental knowledge that will benefit them their whole lives.

“Youth development and the environment are two key focuses of Bridgestone’s Tomorrow Matters initiative and this project certainly met the criteria.

“We’re so pleased to see the grant will be used to generate a lasting and positive impact for the school and its students.”
