Moree won the Connolly Cup last season, defeating Glen Innes in the Grand Final at Taylor Oval to remain undefeated in the prestigious Northern Inland Competition.
The Senior Moree First XI will be somewhat under-done with last weekend’s entire round washed out.
Carrying new sponsorship from the Moree Golf Club for the 2016/17 Season, the Moree squad are looking to impress with a mixture of old heads combining with some new faces from the local senior teams.
And please, some variety in the bowling!
Kyle O’Connor’s men will need to learn from the Queensland Bulls in the Matador Cup final last Sunday, where QLD failed to bat out their 50 overs, and gave the match to NSW.
If Phil Jaques was coaching Moree this Sunday, you would hear him stress that very point; keep them in the field, and bat out every ball.
The early season hit out against Inverell was disappointing from the batting perspective, with Moree missing the steady hand of Nick Bettington holding up one end from the get-go.
The selectors will need to find a skillful and patient replacement who can, and will bat through the inning, no easy task in these days of hit and giggle cricket. And please, some variety in the bowling!
Daryl Smith was the most effective against the Highlanders, mixing it up on the syntho rather than sitting it up to be carted all around the park.
Moree Juniors open their Rep season this Sunday against Gunnedah, with Jeremy Matthews’ Under 12’s and David Orr’s Under 14’s also at Harborne from 9.00am.
The Moree Under 16s, wearing a new ‘2 blues’ WJ’s strip will play at Collins Park No 1 in Narrabri. The 16s are again taking in a few Narrabri juniors as they did so successfully last season and hope to again be the winners of the Ross Taylor Cup, for a third time in four years.
MDCA’s many supporters will be looking forward to seeing the first rep games scored live on MyCricket, whether you are behind the golf ball or on the spray rig, you can check out the game’s progress online.
