Caban will be competing in the women’s breakaway roping event at the National Rodeo Finals, which begin on Thursday, October 27 and continue until Sunday, October 30 in Warwick, QLD.
Caban is no stranger to the finals, having won seven national titles since 2001 – two in breakaway roping, two in barrell racing and three all-round cowgirl titles.
Despite previously winning two roping titles, the current sixth-rank said she is more of a barrell-racer than a roper.
“It’s probably my least favourite,” she said.
The Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) has said Caban is “one to watch” in the upcoming finals.
“Past winner Wendy Caban is sixth going in the finals and is only in one event so can focus totally on her roping,” APRA said in a statement.
We’ve got a chance to win, I’ve just got to keep it together and keep my mind straight.

However she’s more reserved about her chances at winning this year.
“My preparation isn’t what it normally is; it’s been wet and we’ve been bailing hay so we haven’t had the time on our hands that we normally have,” Caban said.
“I always try and stay confident but I haven’t had the practise that I normally would leading up to the finals. We’ve got a chance to win, I’ve just got to keep it together and keep my mind straight.”
Caban said she’s excited for the competition.
“I’m looking forward to getting away for a few days,” she said.
Caban’s husband Troy will also be competing in the finals in the team roping event with Luke Taylor from Glen Innes. Wendy and Troy have been doing rodeos together for the past 17 years.
To make it to the APRA finals, competitors must be ranked in the top 15 for each event, based on the amount of prize money they’ve earnt in the past 12 months.
