A total of 43 teams from around the region competed in the round-robin carnival on Sunday, July 24, which organisers said was a fantastic turn-out.

“It was a record turn-out for our carnivals,” Moree Rugby Union Club secretary Justin Barnes said.

“The day went very smoothly.

“We had lots of help from our members and the senior rugby union club.”

Under 6s right through to under 14s competed in the rugby union carnival on Sunday, with teams travelling to Moree to participate from all over the central north area including Tamworth, Gunnedah, Inverell, Narrabri, Barrabra, Walca, Scone, Coonamble and Quirindi.

Moree fielded seven teams on the day including an under 6s team and two teams for under 8s, 10s and 12s.

Each team played roughly three games on the day as part of the round-robin competition.

With half-hour games and no scoring, the carnivals are all about learning new skills and teaching the juniors to enjoy the game, rather than being competitive.

Junior rugby union carnivals are held every second Sunday with each club in the region taking turns in hosting.

Moree Junior Rugby Union Club will be heading to Quirindi this weekend to compete in another carnival.

Under 8s player Alexandra Warby has been an eager mascots for the Moree Bulls seniors teams recently and said she loves playing rugby union.

Alexandra’s favourite part of the game is tackling and scoring.

“When you tackle someone and get a try,” she said.

The Moree Bulls will host the Inverell Highlighters this Saturday, July 30 at Weebolla Oval in round 13 of the Central North competition.
