While it was the second time for Will Bartel, Lukas Cooke, Jordan Frahm and Jim Orr, it was a completely new experience for Bailey Bourke, Hamish Cannington and James Wicks.
“I wanted to do the ocean swim to challenge myself, as well as it is the first step to the triple crown award given out at TAS which I would like to achieve,” said James, who crossed the line in 36:57.
“I didn't really expect a time since it was my first ocean swim but I did do better than I expected. It was very enjoyable and I’d highly recommend it.”
Hamish was the first of the group out of the water in 34:19, a reflection of regular training with the school’s triathlon team.

Like James, some undertook the swim because it is part of the school’s Triple Crown award, for those who achieve the swim, the City to Surf and the 111km Hawkesbury Canoe Classic during their time at the school.
The swim is also a requisite component of the school’s surf life saving program, in which Year 11 students can achieve their Surf Bronze Medallion in conjunction with Sawtell Surf Life Saving Cub.
“Just as gratifying as the results of the stronger swimmers is seeing the efforts of students who may not be natural swimmers but who have set themselves a personal challenge and accomplished that,” swimming co-ordinator Jim Pennington said.
