The Bureau of Meteorology looks set to fully-automate the service over the next 18 months. Parkes MP Mark Coulton yesterday told the Moree Champion he would be meeting with Environment Minister Greg Hunt this week to oppose the move.
“I don’t like the idea of positions in the country being moved to the city. So I will be going to talk to him about it,” he said.
The BoM announced Friday that staff would be cut from all of its 24 offices in regional Australia once they became fully automated within the next five years.
“They will be offered positions elsewhere if they want to take them, but I don’t whether they do or not,” Mr Coulton said.
“I am going to express my concern over the decision. It was one made by the Bureau and not the government as such.
“We need to make sure they are doing the right thing.”
