Mr Townsend discussed the history of the chamber, how it has evolved over the years. The purpose behind the chamber such as advocacy and policy support. How it helps stimulate the economy and increase the sustainability of business in the state.
“At the moment we are lobbying the state government to cut payroll tax and also review public holiday penalty rates which will allow businesses to open more on public holidays and increase employment,” Mr Townsend said.
Mr Townsend believes that Moree’s Chamber president David MacLellan is vibrant, keen and has resurrected it.
“I think the ideas [the chamber had at the meeting] were great. They focused on the younger generation which is a great start because they have a thirst for knowledge. As well as support for entrepreneurs.”
Mr Townsend is planning to attend another event in Moree in April.
Moree’s Chamber of Commerce president, David MacLellan, said last three events that were held by the chamber attendance had greatly increased.
“Mr Townsend came to explain where NSW business chamber fits in and the benefits of joining. A lot of people don’t realise what you actually get from joining the chamber. You can receive legal and marketing advice,” he said.
After Mr Townsend’s presentation the floor was open for a 15 minute question and answer session.
“It turned out to be an hour of ideas for future event and future direction.
“We are looking to develop a calendar for the next 12 months to plan at least half a dozen social and networking events and half a dozen events to discuss specific topics.
“Two examples are networking event aimed at encouraging young staff members to attend meetings so they can get support from each other. Also, hold an evening about succession planning and how to pass it on to the next generation.”
The Chamber are meeting tonight to plan events for the next three to 12 months.
