Along with clubs from Inverell, Tamworth and Armidale, Moree plan to fill a junior’s side, targeting players from 12 to 16 years old, to play in the TAFL (Tamworth) competition.
Tina and Duane Macey are part of the regional junior AFL committee who wanted to see those too old for AusKick (5 to 12 years) continue playing the sport before heading into seniors (16 years and above).
“Basically we’ve seen kids kind of drop off after Auskick because they are too young for the senior competition and don’t have anything to do at AFL so they look to other sports,” Tina said.
“In this competition the juniors will play wherever the seniors play which is a win-win for us,” she said.
Macey encouraged any juniors interested in AFL to contact the club or attend a training evening at Taylor Oval on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5.30pm.
“We already have a few recruits for our junior’s side, five of which were selected for the NSW AFL NIAS squad.
“Wyatt Roberts, Rhys Smith, Byron Smith, Adrian Smith and Tyson Green were chosen based on their skills and ability. This is Tyson’s second year but the other four are new.”
Roberts said uniforms and training dates were given to the squad at a registration and growth day at Armidale on Saturday. “We got out uniforms and listened to a motivational speaker, learnt about nutrition and exercise, we were told some information about training days and were able to meet the rest of the team.
“Our first training session together is next Sunday in Inverell,” he said.
Macey said a major sponsor was another recruit the Moree Suns Club was hoping to find.
“We’re getting very busy with registrations for juniors, seniors and Auskick start in March.”
Those interested in competing in the 2016 TAFL season can visit the ‘Moree Suns’ page on Facebook, attend training or email the club at moreesuns@hotmail.com.
“There will be more information and dates posted on the Suns Facebook page so to keep up to date and for more information like the page.”
Macey also mentioned a super clinic being held in Inverell on Monday and said anyone interested in attending to meet two Swans players email the club as soon as possible.
