The announcement was made in Moree on Saturday morning as Moree Plains Shire Council (MPSC) mayor, Katrina Humphries and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall met at the train station, opposite Moree’s new bypass.
Cr Humphries was pleased to hear the security upgrade would complement CCTV cameras along the bypass and offer comfort to train users.
“It’s the way of the future; good quality, high-definition CCTV installations. It’ll all fit hand in glove with existing cameras around the pool and bypass and it will make local police officers work a lot easier,” she said.
Cr Humphries and Mr Marshall agreed the Moree train station had little reports of safety concerns in the past, but the comfort for travellers was a bonus.
“The safety upgrades will make a big, solid and very safe precinct and with the comfort of having an emergency button if assistance is needed will not only help travellers but also make local police officers work a lot easier,” she said.
Mr Marshall explained the customer help point, when pressed, connected to a 24/7 emergency support centre where real-time assistance would be provided.
“I think it’s great for train stations who don’t particularly have staff on 24/7 and if the train rolls in late, travellers can feel all alone when stepping onto the platform,” he said.
Mr Marshall said he would be in close contact with TrainLink NSW staff and NSW Transport to ensure the cameras were pointing in necessary directions.
He predicted work would begin in the coming weeks and the installation would be completed before June.
Cr Humphries' message to those thinking about committing crimes in South East Moree was short and sweet.
“A big message there to baddies, stay out of Moree, we don’t want you!”
