The project will see outdated classrooms replaced by new, open-plan indoor and outdoor learning centres, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre.
The project targets improving and encouraging community engagement.
As construction fences started going up in anticipation of breaking ground on the multi-million dollar upgrade, the plans were welcomed by executive principal Muriel Kelly.
Mrs Kelly said the upgrade would lead the school into a new direction for community engagement, while also maximising on student security.
She said the project was about giving local students the school they deserved.
“It is an exciting time for everybody involved with the school,” Mrs Kelly said.
“We have had a lot of consultation to create a unique design that suits us here at Moree East Public.”
Mrs Kelly and Moree East’s senior leader of community engagement and connections Matthew Priestly agreed the school was in desperate need of refurbishment.
Mrs Kelly commended the work of the school’s grounds staff in keeping the school in excellent condition, but said infrastructure was dated, making the major overhaul a welcome sight.
“There will be new learning spaces for every student from Kindergarten to Year 6,” she said.
“Importantly the unique design that we have helped create will provide improved interaction with parents and the community.”
Ms Kelly said works were anticipated to be completed in about 18 months and, aside from a number of new and better equipped teaching spaces, will see the school fitted out with a new hall, refurbished library, teaching kitchen and secure play areas.
The completed works promise to make Moree East a unique flagship for the future direction of NSW public education, which Ms Kelly said was seeking to engage and include the community in the students’ learning.
