In a game which foreshadowed the next day’s World Cup win to Australia, the Crows restricted the Bulls to not many before their powerful batting line-up made light work of the target, winning with plenty of balls and overs to spare.
But where the Aussies were sharp in the field the Crows left a lot to be desired. Harry Woods was particularly guilty, dropping six catches before somewhat making up for it with a Maxwell-style run-out.
Nathan Holland top scored for the Bulls with 36 before falling to Stuart McFadyen, who also claimed the wicket of Mick Grant for 16.
McFadyen finished with figures of 3/26.
Sam Copeman scored 17 not out.
Chasing 124 for victory, the Crows’ opening pair of Ben Day and Ben Legg got off to a typically swashbuckling start.
Day’s first two scoring shots went to the boundary and his third cleared it. He went on to a quick-fire 37 before falling to Heath Riggs, while Legg top-scored with 55 not out to secure man-of-the-match.
Riggs finished with 2/22.
Mick Grant and Matt Moore were the other wicket-takers.
Both teams went into the final on an equal win-loss ratio but the Crows finished at the top because of a single bonus point.
Their earlier clash had been cancelled after the Bulls forfeited due to rugby commitments.
Moree and District Cricket Club treasurer and secretary, Sophie Evans, said the game was an accurate reflection of the season as a whole.
“It was pretty humorous,” Evans said.
“The Bulls weren't in it to take it seriously and neither were the Crows. The whole idea was to have a bit of fun. It was a very light-hearted game and everyone enjoyed themselves, and the friendly slogging.
“Most of the guys in the two teams are mates so it was a pretty friendly affair.”
She said the highlight was Damien Kelly scoring five and breaking a run of four ducks.
Evans thanked umpire Tony Gadsby for his efforts throughout the season.
She said the club would be holding an AGM in April to determine the format of next season.
