That’s why a group of locals in Garah decided to annually host a trivia night to raise money for their older residents struggling to find funds for doctor trips, medical procedures and specialist visits.
One of the organisers, Maureen Ledingham, said the event first started in 2012 for “a bit of fun”.
“We just decided to have a trivia night to get everyone together and have a great night out at Garah. It’s grown a lot since the first trivia night and last year we had about 14 tables which was fantastic,” she said.
In previous years people from Mungindi, Ashley and Moree have travelled to Garah for the event.
“We are hoping to get around the same numbers, if not more, as last year. We’d like to fill around 15 tables as it is six per table at $10 each. So it’s a reasonably cheap and fun night for everyone,” Ms Ledingham said.
Ashley resident, Peter Van Driest, has already prepared the large variety of questions ready to be answered on the evening.
“He is absolutely fantastic. I don’t know where he gets his questions from but they cover everything from sport, general knowledge and even local questions. He always creates a great atmosphere and encourages everyone to get involved,” she said.
To spice things up this year, there will be a chocolate wheel spin between each round of trivia questions, and each spin will give a prize to one lucky participant.
“There is going to be plenty of opportunities to win prizes. We have the chocolate wheel, lucky door prize, lucky chair prize, raffle and prizes for the winning team and the team that places last,” she said.
The raffle offers for first place a seven-piece outdoor set, for second a large 70-80kg esky and for third, three bottles of wine.
“Last year we cleared just over $800 and now that money is going towards helping about three of our Garah residents going through treatment as we speak. Many of our residents are battling cancer so anything we can give will help their journey be less stressful. The night is for an amazing cause and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy,” Ms Ledingham said.
Those in attendance are encouraged to bring their own beverages and nibblies, and can pay as they arrive to the Garah town hall on Saturday (March 28).
“Hopefully we can get everyone seated by 6.30pm and get the questions happening at around 7pm. It’s all for a bit of fun, a chance to enjoy a good night and help locals from Garah,” she said.
