THE Moree Plains Shire Council, with assistance from the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) through the Floodplain Management Program, has completed a study to identify dwellings most at risk of over floor flooding.

Over 2000 homes in the Moree, Pallamallawa, Yarraman, Gwydirfield and Bendygleet areas were identified and a priority list for funding has been established.
Assessment manager Daniel Boyce said the council has written to owners encouraging them to apply for funding to raise the floor level of their dwellings.
“Council has written to the owners of the 50 most vulnerable homes identified during the study but the response has been quite poor,” Mr Boyce said.
There have been 12 significant flood events in the Moree Plains since 1921, with the consequences ranging from minor inconvenience to major social, environmental and economic damage.
“We encourage all owners who receive a letter from council to apply to access the funding to raise their home and minimise the risk of inundation in the next flood event,” Mr Boyce said.
The Moree Plains Shire Council will continue to write to homeowners and facilitate access to grant funding through OEH.
