In conjunction with Youth Week there will be a colour run held on April 11 where residents will have the chance to participate in a five-kilometre run or walk whilst getting covered in a safe, fun and colourful range of powder throughout the track.
Moree Plains Shire Council support officer, Jacqui Moore, said locals often travelled to cities such as the Gold Coast to join the thousands of keen participants for colour run events.
“The idea of hosting a colour run in Moree came about in one of our youth council meetings and it was just coincidence that Codie (Kennedy - PCYC trainee club manager) contacted us and wanted to do a fun run as well,” Miss Moore said.
The pair teamed up and created a Facebook page ‘PCYC Moree & Youth Council Run4Kids Colour Run’ which received more than 100 likes in one night.
Mrs Kennedy said the colour run would replace the Moree PCYC’s annual Time4Kids event.
“This year we thought we would spice it up a little and change from the traditional mock cell. On the day the cell will be available as a photo booth to all participants. This is the PCYC’s largest annual fundraiser and we are asking the community to support it. All the money raised from the event goes towards our police and club programs,” she said.
There will be six colour gauntlets spaced evenly around the track and each station will feature a different colour.
“There will be people there throwing and squirting powder over the participants as they come through and the local fire brigade will be on-site to spray a little water and show the littlies the fire truck,” Mrs Kennedy said.
With more than 150 runners already registered, the event is set to be popular.
“The colour run will commence at 2pm at the Moree and District Services Club and finish at the same location. At the end of the race there will be a large colour throw where all participants will receive a small bag of powder to disperse into the air at the same time. After there will be festivities for children such as laser tag and the traditional three-legged race and egg, and sack races,” she said.
Barbecue facilities, drinks and other food will be available on the day.
“Moree needed something new and vibrant. After seeing another PCYC do an event like this, we didn’t hesitate. And even with our town and surrounding districts in gripping drought they still put their hands in their pocket to help. This just shows the strength and calibre of our community. The greatest thing is that all children can participate for free and also receive a free PCYC Moree membership. In saying this, there must be an adult with the children at all times during the race. We are very excited to see our organising and hard work pay off,” Mrs Kennedy said.
The youth council and PCYC partnered with local company Simply Stuck to create shirts for the event, and all participants who register before April 6 will receive a pack which includes a shirt, sunglasses and a headband.
“Moree is an exceptional community and has great businesses in town to support these events. Without our local businesses this would not be possible, so from our club and as a community we thank the business houses that have supported us,” Mrs Kennedy said.
There are 300 packs, and spots are filling quickly. To secure your spot call the PCYC on 6752 3741 or call in and speak with Codie.
