With work commitments and schooling hours, sometimes it can be tough to notch up the 120 hours needed to hand your learner log book in to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
Early last year, PCYC’s across the state rolled out a Safer Drivers Course and now the Moree PCYC has been approved by the RMS to run the course.
Manager Andrew Ryan said it was a lengthy process to get the program running at the local PCYC, but knew it was something that would benefit residents.
“PCYC does not want to be known for just its sports programs. We are diverse and already run a program for traffic offenders so this program complements the traffic offenders’ course as it teachers the rules and things to look out for before offences are made,” he said.
Mr Ryan said the course gave three hours of classroom education and two hours of driving with a qualified driving instructor.
“The benefits learner drivers are getting out of these courses are massive. Not only do they receive proper, in-depth training from a professional but they are also able to accumulate 20 hours from the five-hour session, which really helps,” he said.
Although it has been a struggle for the club to find someone willing to do the appropriate training to run the courses, they’ve partnered with Gunnedah’s PCYC and have found an instructor willing to travel.
“In Moree we have around 300 learner drivers and about half or more of those have the 50 hours that is required before being able to undertake the course. So on average we are expecting about eight to 10 learners to attend the courses, which is good because our limit is 12,” Mr Ryan said.
The course dates have been set for March 14 where learners will be doing work in a group discussion on how to manage risks on the road. The second date March 22 will give the learners an opportunity to have a two-hour coaching session whilst driving.
“Times are yet to be confirmed but anyone interested should call the Moree PCYC. Also for any boarding school parents who would like their child to undertake this course, please call and express your interest so we can try and run another during the school holidays,” he said.
