Organiser, Lorraine Bartel, said applications closed on March 6.
“Anyone who is over the age of 60 can be nominated and we are hoping to get plenty of nominations this year,” she said.
The award covers the whole shire and has had previous recipients from places such as Mungindi and Boomi.
“We’re hoping the nominations aren’t just for people in Moree… We’d like more recognition for our seniors all across the Moree Plains Shire,” Mrs Bartel said.
Last year there were four nominations and Murray Shaw was named the Senior Citizen of the Year.
Mr Shaw was nominated for being an active member of all communities he had resided in since returning from serving in Vietnam with the Royal Australian Air Force as a cook’s assistant.
“Seniors who volunteer and help out their community, those who contribute their time to helping someone or assisting at events can be nominated. There will be no face-to-face judging so information on the nomination sheet needs to cover everything the recipient has done,” she said.
The awards will run in conjunction with the 2015 Seniors Week.
“There will be a lot of things happening throughout the week for all of the seniors throughout the Moree Plains. We hope everyone jumps on board and nominates a deserving senior for the awards,” she said.
The week of events will begin on Sunday, March 15 and will continue through with the luncheon and award ceremony on Wednesday, March 18, before wrapping up on Saturday, March 21.
“Anyone who would like to nominate a friend or family member, please call me to get a nomination form on 6752 3692, if I don’t answer just leave a message,” she said.
For more information about the week phone Moree Plains Shire Council on 6757 3222.
