The Golf Club skittled Moree FC for 80 runs, with veteran seamer and stand-in captain Steve Scarlett using his decades of hard won guile to claim 4/20. Three were clean bowled, one was caught on the boundary by Joe Hinchliffe, who also took a screamer off the bowling of Norm Duke. Another crafty medium pacer, Duke picked up 3/15, while young firebrand Paddy Montgomery claimed 2/13.
For FC, Josh Boland top scored with a quick 35, while Mitch Johnson eked out 17.
Golfies opener Nick Bettington was 42 not out and Scarlett was on 17 as the Golfies chased their target for the loss of two wickets. Both were claimed by Darrel Smith, whose tight opening spell went for 16 off six overs.
On the other field, the Stallions ran rampant against the Services Club, with openers Kyle O’Connor and Ben Legg both getting 39 apiece. Ben Day top scored with 58 while Beau McMahon scored 41.
Mark Sampson was the best of the Servies’ bowlers with 2/38, while Lyndon Madden Snr’s erratic, heated spell resulted in figures of 2/45, as the free scoring Stallions set an unlikely 265 for victory.
It was never likely, and the Servies were dismissed for 88. Jay Morby was the Servies’ only notable contributor with the bat, scoring 54. Nick Fisher was the pick of the bowlers with two for seven, while McMahon claimed 2/15.
The Stallions finished at the top of the table with 10 wins for 40 points, and will meet the Golfies in a season decider this weekend. Though the Golfies had one less win, the two teams go into the match with an even head to head record after two victories apiece in their four clashes.
Servies finished third with 12 points, while FC came last with eight. The two teams will play off for third this weekend.
Both matches will start at 1pm on Saturday at Ron Harborne Oval.
