After putting out a feeler for locals to be apart of a committee, the planning process began.
The first meeting was low in numbers, but has since jumped after a meeting of about 15 residents yesterday.
Although dates are yet to be set in stone, the council have started planning an exhibition night, curated by Moree Plains Gallery director, Vivien Thompson.
The exhibition will feature a range of photographs of the original freedom ride, courtesy of the Mitchell Library.
Following the exhibition, will be the official opening at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre.
Local clubs and individuals have been encouraged by Moree Plains Shire Council to become apart of the commemoration by coordinating an event for the Freedom Ride’s Calendar of Events.
So far events such as golf, bowls, film nights, morning teas, school functions and sports days have been discussed.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, a group from the University of Sydney will visit Moree to discuss the events.
Another special guest will visit Moree during the week of commemoration.
Rachel Perkins, daughter of Charles will arrive with a number of the original freedom riders. Moree Plains Shire Council’s Kylie Benge would like to hear from anyone within the community who would like to be involved in the events.
To contact Kylie, email kylie.benge@mpsc.nsw.gov.au or call 6757 3234.
