The Moree Champion snapped some photos of the library’s Summer Reading Club, which runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am.
The children learnt that aliens only come to earth to steal underwear, and afterwards made their own alien with a custom pair of underpants for it to wear.
There were also some children getting creative with shaving cream, acrylic and plastic butter knives at the Moree Plains Gallery’s holiday workshops.
Janelle Boyd, who is running the workshops, said Wednesday’s session was focused on multimedia art.
“I want to get them out of the habit of just using Textas or paint but to use a whole lot of stuff together,” she said
In one project she got the children to pour shaving cream in a foil pie dish to discover the principles of mixing colours.
“Art doesn’t have to last forever,” she told her pupils as they mixed the cream and colours with their hands. “A famous artist called Damien Hirst does all sorts of weird stuff that only lasts for a few days, like putting food out to rot.”
The children may have had divergent opinions on the merits of the avant garde, but they all definitely enjoyed getting hands on with art.
