Students are participating in varied roles around the community from health and education to agriculture and trades.
Indiah Ross is spending a week at the Moree District Health Service.
She, along with Ivy Clements and Ashleigh Walker, chose to spend a week at the hospital learning about nursing.
Indi said even though it was a short week, she learnt a lot. “I’ve helped patients get ready for showers, I’ve prepared food, made beds and learnt a lot about checking on patients and the caring side of it all,” she said.
Indi spent time in the, sometimes hectic, emergency department and in different wards around the hospital.
“I really wanted to do work experience here because I want to become a registered nurse. I’ve looked after a few family members who needed help and enjoyed it. This week has been eye opening and a great experience,” she said.
With the help of MSC career advisor Sheree Cayirylys Indi applied for a school-based traineeship in nursing at the Moree hospital and was successful.
“So in Year 11 and 12 I will spend two days of the week at the hospital and I’ll have to learn how to juggle my workload. It will be a challenge but I’m up for it; I’m really excited,” she said.
As a result of the two years, Indi will complete a Certificate III in Nursing and hopes to go to university to become a registered nurse.
“Thank you to the hospital, Mrs Cayirylys, and Jane Garland for the opportunity,” Indi said.
Meanwhile, Claudia Leifels got to learn from dad Tim and co at Alice Downs Farms as part of her work experience.
The 21,000 acre “Alice Downs” is a cropping property about 30km east of Moree on the Gwydir Highway.
The MSC student said her week of “helping the boys” handle grain, clean tractors and sort out the sheds was all fantastic experience which would help her achieve her career goal – to be an agronomist. “I love it,” she said.
