A new starting gate means riders can no longer jump the gun and must learn to balance on their bikes in a stationary position at the top of the ramp until the gate drops.
Brothers Matt and Brad McLane go to the club’s Friday sessions and head to the track most weekends for extra practice.
Matt said the latest addition had given him an edge over his older brother - for now.
“I’ve finally found something I’m better than him at,” he said. “Balancing.”
The starting gate is just the latest milestone in months of work spent organising a committee, getting approval and improving the track which led to the club’s official launch in September.
“When we got it back, the track was a mess,” publicity officer, Kathryn Poole, said.
“We got in a contractor to clean it up [with a bobcat] and the guys put in a lot of effort in their spare time.
“The biggest thing though was getting rid of the weeds.”
Since its launch the club has focused on training coaches, getting the riders comfortable with the track and teaching them “not to run into each other,” Poole said.
The new club has more than 20 members with ages ranging from three-year-old Kenji Thomas to his dad Chris.
And improvements are set to continue - next on the agenda is resurfacing work on the track.
The club meets Friday afternoons from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Next week is the last of the year before resuming the first week back to school.
