Held over four days, NetFest offers a mix of netball, nightlife, sun, sand and surf to people all across Australia who travel each year to the massive event.
Being Macey’s third time at Netfest with the ladies team, she decided to mix it up and take a couple of males to try their luck in the mixed outdoor competition.
She said Netfest was, and always had been, a “whole different experience”.
“Instead of a full court, Netfest is half court games with four people on the court from each team at once and everyone can run everywher,e but only two people are allowed in the shooting ring at one time,” she said.
Macey also noted the outdoor games were played in the sand only metres away from the salty waters.
“There were six of us in the mixed team and five in the ladies and each team played five games on Friday and four on Saturday. Our mixed team did extremely well and won the beach two division,” she said.
At the end of day two the mixed team, Breasties and Testies, were first on the ladder and played Fishnets during the semi-finals.
“We won against them 9-0 and automatically were in the grand final against Adfa, a university group from Canberra. We won the grand final against them 7-6 and it was a very close game.
“We were six-all with 30 seconds to go. It just so happened that we had the ball and basically I was in the shooting ring trying to hold the ball for as long as I could. Both the defenders were penalised and had to stand beside so there was a lot of pressure on me to get it in, and I just popped it up into the hoop to win the game,” she said.
The ladies team were running third after the second day but did not make it through to the grand final.
“We lost two games, drew two and won five which was a fantastic effort for the ladies. We were chosen to play in beach two division and we all very much enjoyed it,” she said.
The three divisions, beach one, two and social, ran on how competitive you were as a team and what you chose to compete in.
“We also won the dress-up competition on the Saturday night. We stuck by the cancer theme and dressed as boobs. There were more than 2000 who played in Netfest this year and most of them would have been dressed up at the party on Saturday but we were the chosen ones to win,” she said.
Macey was also lucky to win signed Netfest balls after competing in a dance competition judged by netballers Liz Ellis and Sharelle McMahon.
“I would encourage every netballer to participate in the beach competition next year. It’s totally different and the atmosphere will blow you away. You can have a swim in between games and you get to meet so many interesting people from all over,” Macey said.
