The ladies including Vicki Angel, Karen Russell, Jill Skinner, Kerrie Hodges and Sharron Holloway all had different reasons for making the move to shave.
For Ms Angel, her reason for shaving was her two children.
“I decided after colouring my hair purple in March last year I’d shave it all off at the next Relay for Life. I’ve seen many of my family members pass away from cancer and I’ve seen a lot survive it, but be it my children or grandchildren we’ll have to suffer from cancer if we do not get a cure soon,” she said.
As an adoptee, Ms Angel learnt her biological mother died of bowel cancer at the age of 39 along with her mother’s two siblings.
“My adoptive mother passed away with liver cancer and my adoptive father survived bowel cancer. I nursed my adoptive mother for the last two weeks, did her palliative care and organised her funeral,” Ms Angel said.
Although there may not be a cure for most cancers, Ms Angel stressed that people should learn about the contributing factors of cancer, including smoking and drinking alcohol.
“I am very passionate about it and that’s why I’m always going to be a part of Relay for Life. I raised $700 because I shaved my hair and I mean, it’s hair, it grows back for me… A lot of chemo patients never get their hair back so I’m lucky,” she said.
It look no more than five minutes each for the ladies to be hairless, and they didn’t waste a second afterwards showing the crowd and fellow Relay goers.
“I posted a fresh picture on Facebook and I’ve had a few responses from people saying I’m brave and some friends were surprised I went through with it,” she said.
Ms Angel said she was already thinking of a new way to raise extra funds at the next Relay for Life.
“The five of us all had different reasons for shaving our heads but really we’re all just as passionate as one another to make the shave and we were all happy with the support from friends, family and the community,” she said.
