Barwon LAC Commander Gelina Talbot said there had been a notable increase in the past month but added strategies employed by the police had led to the arrest of a number of offenders who police believe to be directly involved in current property crime.
Arrests included four teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18.
Superintendent Talbot said whilst police continued to undertake operations targeting property and drug offences – which are closely related – there are things the community can undertake in order to help.
“Most criminals are opportunistic and the best thing you can do is to make it as hard as possible to break into your home, business or car,” Supt Talbot said.
“Thefts from vehicles are happening with increasingly regularity and more often than not it is due to the valuables being left in view and/or valuables left unsecured,” she said.
Supt Talbot said residents should also be mindful of the property stored and unsecured in the back of utilities.
“Residents are urged to keep an eye on your neighbours’ property.
“If somebody sees a vehicle that looks out of place, write the license plate number down.
“If somebody sees a person that looks out of place, don't hesitate to call us immediately,” she said.
