The Moree District Historical Society in conjunction with the show society and RSL sub branch will showcase a static display to help celebrate the centenary of Anzac in April 2015, and are asking residents to loan their pieces for the event.
The display will run for a week after Anzac Day at the War Memorial Education Centre (old library) between 9am and 4pm.
Steve Ritchie from the historical society said following on from the group’s hugely popular static display in the town hall during Moree’s sesquicentenary, he hoped this event would be just as big of a hit with residents and visitors.
“That was a major success and we had people continuously coming through,” Mr Ritchie said. “We would have had thousands of visitors and a lot of people came back two or three times,” he said.
Next year’s display will be launched by a smaller static display, which will later be moved to the centre, at the annual show.
Karen Munn said with the show next year falling on Anzac Day Saturday’s events would get underway later in respect of all the Anzac services to be hosted. She said someone from the defence force would conduct the official opening, and she hoped local veterans would participate in the grand parade.
RSL life member, John Tramby, said he had so far found 260 names of people born in the area or who were working locally and enlisted for the war in Moree who were omitted from the original honour roll, including two nurses.
“I’m still looking for more names,” he said. “I’ve found 19 who were killed in Gallipoli and I’m still looking for more of those names too,” he said.
The group is hoping this display will be just a taste of what will be on display in the building in the long-term with the announcement of the centre’s future direction.
“A lot of important information has been lost or thrown out and we’ll be able to offer a safe and secure area to display these items,” Mr Tramby said.
Mr Ritchie said every town had a museum, except Moree, and believed this was a positive step forward.
“It’s difficult to obtain funding without being a museum so that would assist us greatly,” he said.
“Our group started in 1962 and we have a lot of local artefacts but nowhere to house them.
“If we were to move into the centre we would have secure storage and everything would be done correctly; catalogued and photographed,” he said.
