Supported by a range of local organisations, the event will be held in the banquet hall from 11am and will be free to all who wish to attend.
Aboriginal Family Health worker at Toomelah, Ada McGrady, heard about Lani’s story through the internet, word of mouth and her published book.
Ms McGrady approached Lani and asked her to visit Moree, Toomelah and Boggabilla in the hopes to encourage women who are or have experienced the same thing to speak up.
Organiser of the event, Denise Raveneau, said Lani will speak about the emotions she faced in the relationship and when she battled her ex in court.
“Everyone is invited to attend and I think that many people in Moree would benefit from hearing her story or even learning about it. She’s done a number of interviews, written a book, has a Facebook page and supports a number of women going through the same thing,” she said.
After years of being with her ex and suffering a number of mental, physical and sexual abuse, Lani found the courage to leave.
More than 12 years ago she was attending an AA meeting where she met the love of her life and father to her six children, John Duckett.
John was the one who convinced Lani to take her ex to court, even though he usually would be against going to the police he knew it was the right thing to do.
During the trial of her ex, Lani gave birth and had to take the stand just days after having a child.
After three months her ex was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment but then he appealed the decision.
She said it was hard to stand up in court again but she knew he had to be held responsible for what he did to her.
Lani said going through the beatings and escaping death so many times made her a stronger person and has allowed her to voice her opinion without a care in the world.
